Studio Monitor Isolation Pad

I fabricated a studio monitor isolation pad to improve the sound of my studio monitors. First, I went to the hardware store to find any materials that resemled acoustic foam. I found air conditioning filters that were the right texture. I planned out how I would make these by measuring my monitors at home. Then I cut the air conditioning filter with a blade to create stackable layers of foam. After that, I tried to think of the best way to fasten the foam together. I wish I had brads to fasten them together, but there were none at the shop. Screws were too sharp at the ends and slid out of the foam. I settled with using rubber cement and put a little bit on each corner and in the center. Then I went on to sewing the fabric casing. Using an old bandana I had, I cut them into smaller sections to create a patchworked fabric base. I created two sheets that I would then sew together. First, I sewed the patches together. Then I sewed the two fabrics inside out, inserted the foam pads and sewed up the other side. To create a sort of trimming/border, I went sewed along the side of the fabric about 1/2 an inch. I really liked how you the red threading was visible on the blue fabric and experimented with the lines and shapes I could create with the seams. It was like doodling with a sewing machine. I added a yellow trim as well to balance the colors.
